Seek and Find: The Koala

Today we are going to discuss the cute and cuddly Koala. They are marsupials native to Australia. Marsupials are mammals born undeveloped and must complete their development in a pouch, much like our kangaroos in Fliparoo the Backflipping Kangaroo! Koala's appear to be furry when in fact they have hair similar to the wool of sheep. They have two opposable thumbs on each hand and their feet have padding and claws for a good grip because as you know they are avid climbers.

Koala's live in the eucalyptus forest of Australia. The trees are their source of food and their home. The eucalyptus tree is highly fragrant and they often smell like eucalyptus. I love the smell of eucalyptus and it comes in handy during the cold season. However it is poisionus when ingested. This is why they sleep 18-22 hrs a day. The long hours help them digest the leaves, break down toxins and get the nutrients needed.

Did you know? Koala's have another pouch in their mouth where they store leaves!
